Going mobile— back in the day, the early 80’s, heading to the Central Coast— “Parmenter Country” Central Coast was doable in a day. Infamously fickled, once you busted through the Goviota pass, it didn’t matter, you were free. On the other side, taken back to a pre-developed landscape California, you were no longer “South”. It was the height of Wayne Lynch’s rugged get-away-from-it-all mystic and SW’s Road Trip photo annuals. We were living it all. 5am wake up calls, colors not even showing in the sky, as soon as we blew through the tunnel, one of us would tap in the half inserted Who’s Next cassette tape already synced to “Going Mobile” and the strum of Townshend’s guitar would take over. To shoot and live in California especially in Santa Barbara you had to love the feel of the wheels on the asphalt, the road became home.
